The Impression Taking Process

Introduction

To enable a custom moulded hearing protection product to be made for you it is necessary to take an impression (mould) of your ears. This process should not be painful although you may experience some unusual sensations (e.g. tickling, coughing) during the process.

It is vital that when asked you provide our technician with as much information as possible to ensure they are fully aware of your medical history with regard to your ears thus ensuring your safety during this process.

Preparing for the Impression Process

There are a number of reasons why on the day our technician might not be able to take an impression of your ears; the most common of these are:

  • Excessive Cerumen (Ear wax)
  • Inflammation due to recent Colds/Flu
  • Infections or fresh wounds
  • Recent Surgery.

To pre-empt this two weeks prior to your appointment we advise you to arrange for an occupational health nurse, practice nurse or GP to examine your ears ensuring any of the above identified conditions are given necessary treatment.

The advice of a pharmacist can also be sought, you may be asked to use oil drops so soften wax prior to ears being syringed
The Process

Stage 1 - Firstly, an inspection of your ear will be carried out by a trained member of staff to ensure it is safe to continue with this procedure.

Stage 2 - Once our member of staff is happy that it is safe to continue, a foam stop is inserted into the ear canal to protect the ear drum from the impression materials.

Stage 3 - Silicon material is then injected slowly into the ear capturing the internal shape. Whilst this procedure is quick and completely free from pain, you will notice an increased loss of hearing as the material goes into the ear.

Stage 4
- The silicone material is then left to set for approximately 5-8 minutes.

Stage 5 - Once cured the impression material is safely removed from the ear along with the foam stop and your hearing and senses will be back to normal.

Stage 6 - Your moulds are placed in a bag with your details on it and the order can now be taken for manufacturing of the completed product.
